I just wanted to share my first matching K98. Its a 1942 CE slant script. I removed cold bluing that the previous owner put on the buttplate. Other than that I didn't do much to it. The only issue I really have with it is it most likely was sanded on a bit but i'm not sure. Also upper receiver has a bit of freckling. Hope it doesn't hurt the value too much.

More pictures. If you look at the fourth picture there seems to be a larger ring around the butt disc in the wood. Its perfectly round like it was made by a machine. Never seen this before.

You are correct in your feeling the stock was sanded a bit. However, whoever did this put a similar finish back on the stock: Sauer's typically have a darker finish in this time period. Here are some pictures of a CE 42 with the original wood finish for comparison. You have a decent rifle and thank you for sharing it here.

good to finally see it. I think overall you did ok. Did the bayonett come with it? Does the scabbard match?
If so, it's worth a couple hundred on its own. Mismatched around a buck. I'd say the rifle suffered from some rust at some point. The pitting is also showing on the lower band. Ce 42's are not to easy to find. ALso the pic's are a little blury. Did you use the macro/flower setting on the camera? The other stock markings are the maker code "Na" and the date. Stock has been sanded as said. But, it has been refinished with some care.

neat !!

I see this now. Saure used a smaller disc than anyone else. I wonder if the stocks had a template on them for where to put the disc ?? This one showing where a larger disc would go and the saure type disc only uses a small portion of that space ???? More opinions would be interesting..

Sweet!

Yes, Sauer used 2.5 cm stock discs, as opposed to the larger 3 cm version.

I'm curious to know: My all matching CE43 has what is clearly a date stamped into the barrel channel of the stock, right next to the serial. I believe it to be the assembly date of the rifle. It uses numerals of the same font and depth as the serial. Others have said that these rifles were not dated, but it can't be other than a date. Does your CE42 have this as well?

Manufacturing shortcuts were just beginning to be incorporated with my rifle. It has a "solid" upper barrel band, and no range marks on the underside of the sight leaf.

Date

If you look at the second group of pictures, the second picture has the date stamped into the barrel channel.

Sauer probably used a different method of bluing too. All my mid-war CE rifles have a very light grey shade to them. D-K 's pic's show it best. Very nice rifle. I love my ce42
