G41m ...

... after two days of thinkin' & talking with mel and richard;;.. i got this G41m at the SOS. dis-assembled & cleaned parts, & oily crude from stock. it turned out very nice. all parts match;.. no trials rifle would ever leave the factory with a laminated stock. probably mid-war replacement. it has only a serial number on the heel & inside the handguard. stock has not been sanded. that factory patched laminate must have been from running short on wood. i also saw this rifle at the max show last year, always looking for more,...

I wouldn't say mid-war replacement. Mel and I went back and forth on a super early g41w I bought from him. He was convinced it was a replacement, til Espeholt's serial study proved three rifles in near range all had laminate stocks. I'm not saying these laminate stocks aren't replacements, and it's the difference between MO and Walther, but three in a row serialized to the rifle? I think time will prove another 41m in laminate close to yours. Gotta love opinions. Beautiful rifle by the way. My fav next to the early W's.

g41 stock ..

... i would say that the laminate blank had a bum spot and they repaired that area before turning the stock ,,, ??? clic pic to enlarge,..

Stock is not a mid war replacement but was done at the factory. I have seen a few other factory matching G41 M rifles with laminate stocks. Not easy to find as most are walnut.

Can't say for sure about the large repair to the stock. That is certainly not factory.

Any serials? By chance?

It would be interesting to compare MO and Walther time frames of laminate stocks by serial, for the 41m and 41w. I'd bet there's a connection.

Could very well be a connection. I have the Walther information, but I don't have the Mauser information as I did not keep up with the G.41 (M) rifles.

Walther is apparent but it may be tough to find info on MO. 41m's in lam are gonna probably be rare compared to the three 359's I know of.

Good luck tracking G41 (M)s. I don't think they have letter blocks.

G41 (W)s don't have letter blocks until 1943. And that is when laminate seems to show up. So it's had to say if the laminate stocks start showing up near the end of 1942 or ???? on G41 (M)s. It is very hard to collect data on G41 rifles. Not many around and most collectors won't share.

It is a very neat design but I cannot imagine being issued this rifle in combat. From holding this very rifle at the SOS show after Terrill bought it is incredibly off balance and its not exactly light either. Plus could you imagine taking this thing apart and cleaning it in the field. Its no wonder these were issued down the line to rear guard troops or discarded somewhere. From my studies I believe most of these that were brought back by vets came out of the Italian campaigns.

And Terrill glad to see you get this rifle you kept asking me about it, if you should buy it. Even though I told you, you already own a couple that didn't change your mind. You told me its just a hobby and you went and bought it lol!

Oh and you guys mention over complex design I believe this gun had over 14 springs in it!
