G43 duv44 for review

Hello, I recently purchased this Duv44 G43 from a collector friend of mine. All matching with unsanded stock with a mint bore, but missing cleaning rod. I’m new to G and K43, so any opinions are welcome. Hope I got a good one.

I was not aware that "awj" made "G43" marked mags. First one I recall ever seeing. Nice rifle.

Agreed, very nice example. However, Yale and Towne Mfg. C. Leitwerke, Velbert, Heidestr. ("awj") only produced "K43" marked magazines. The magazine pictured appears to have a non-period "G43" overstrike and is partially repainted. Sad to see a fairly rare magazine ruined like that.

Thanks about the rifle, bummer about the magazine. Does anyone have a nice proper magazine and maybe a nice cleaning rod?

Nice rifle. It's not easy to find early BLM rifles. I like the thread muzzles. Thanks for sharing.

depending one what you paid you did well.. These early Blm rifles arent easy to find in nice shape.. Your close up photos are blurry. I know how hard it can be to take nice close ups. This is a b block..
The mag I would do more research before passing it off a messed up mag. I find it hard to believe its been restamped..
The only thing I can pick up on is the butt plate is the later type with the smooth door and this rifle should have a ribbed door type. Hardly any reason to not buy a rifle.. Could have been changed out during the war ?
Overall very nice and worth keeping !

Looks like a really nice one to me. I’ll have to check on my BLM serial number listings and see if it’s ever been reported (at work right now). I can’t see how the mag has been re-stamped either. It looks right to me. Agreed on the smooth butt stock door. The smooth is a little later, but who knows how the later got installed. The lack of cleaning rod and butt stock door are nothing to worry about. Easy fixes, but may be a little bit finding them to replace. Hopefully all is correct with the internals. Nice rifle.

Thanks all for the information and viewing my new G43. I Feel better about the 3,000 dollar purchase. Just purchased a cleaning rod, thanks Titan for the update on the magazine, wasn’t sure about it.

I am quite surprised actually – neither Hitler’s Garands or Rough Forged state the existence of such magazines, although Mr. Weaver does indicate by way of a footnote that “gcb” “G43” marked magazines are rumored to exist. It is hard for me to believe that no article, book, publication, or magazine study that I can find identifies this variant.

I am quite surprised actually – neither Hitler’s Garands or Rough Forged state the existence of such magazines, although Mr. Weaver does indicate by way of a footnote that “gcb” “G43” marked magazines are rumored to exist. It is hard for me to believe that no article, book, publication, or magazine study that I can find identifies this variant.

Unfortunately there is a lot of information that Weaver left out of his book. Unlike Bruce and Mike, who spoke with, shared and exchanged information with many collectors here and had peer review of their work before publishing, Darrin decided to write his book on his own. And personally I think it shows.

It's not that his book is full of mis-information (although there is some which could have been avoided with peer review). The larger issue with Rough Forged is that it did not contain so much new information that we know of. Such as this, that there are in fact awj G43 marked mags.

Whatever, at least I'm not bitter about it. Lol.

Given the rifle in total... I believe that non-ribbed plate could be correct.

Good looking rifle...I wouldn't change the butt plate or assume it isn't correct. It very well could be completely original to the rifle and just an example of the transition from ribbed to non-ribbed. I believe G43's from multiple serial blocks were constructed at the same time...pretty sure I've seen this discussed before... so it isn't inconceivable this rifle is an example of a rifle which was actually built later than the block might initially indicate.

Just for reference here is my DUV 44, which came from a well known collector here...it is an "H" block with smooth butt plate

It is full of misinformation though. The section on SVTs is a disaster, just full of trash.

Indeed. I'm not a long time G/K43 collector as many in this forum and other forums are but I have enough original examples and variants within those examples to prove to me that some contradiction to the information within the
text of either book, or both, is clearly apparent. To his credit though, and definitely not to criticize his work, it is a fantastic reference with a wealth of information that a person simply can't find elsewhere, but it needs to be understood that, like any reference written with limited information, it isn't necessarily 100% applicable to every G/K43 rifle (or related item) and it definitely isn't without error as new information comes to light. What's bothersome though is when folks mistakenly assume something is or isn't correct simply because it might contradict what they read in the book(s).
