Gewehr 71 Amberg 1883 5457

This is the year of Amberg Gewehr 71s for me.

Snagged this online, had a buy it now that I couldn't lose at. Another really nice mostly matching Amberg. Missing the rod and rear triggerguard screw, and has some carvings. Otherwise matching and with a wonderful unit mark.

What's interesting to me is that the barrel looks Amberg made, unlike the 1878s. Dr Storz mentions something about Amberg having difficulty producing their own barrels at first, guess by 1883 they remedied this.

And more.

The stock looks like it might have a rack number painted on. I've never noticed this on German weapons, though the font looks very German, notice the 3.

The bolt. Taking these apart really sucks by the way.

I agree it is a beautiful rifle, amazing condition considering everything that transpired between then and now.. I added it to the database thread, which is always something I like to do, add another great example. Recently I added quite a few from an auction site and i am glad to see Craig Brown's project proceeding well.

I noticed Cyrus's contribution was significant so far!

Thanks for the comments. These things are really growing on me. I love the look, they are basically bolt action muskets, and most of them have awesome unit marks. Hopefully I can add a few more to the study!

Nice pickup mantis another find Gewehr 71 too your collection. As for me I'm hunting for a nice 1871 carbine or Jager rifle.
