I’m in the home stretch with rephotographing everything. With the great lighting today i decided to redo this one.
This is a beat up but matching except for pin Simson I got from Paul a while back. It’s a nice Saxon Simson with very clear stamps throughout. The cypher is fantastic. Most of the acceptance are typical of Saxon Gews: c/B, c/R, c/W, and c/K.

Bolt. The pin is a generic replacement. I imagine the original was clipped. I’d like to get an imperial pin for it.

Cyrus, that one is a definite diamond in the rough. It's got that gritty "been there" look without compromising on originality. Great photography, it really brings new life to these rifles.

Nice rifle! Interesting Star of David on the bottom of the receiver. I haven’t seen that before. Very clear cartouches. And it’s a Simson!
I have a ‘16 and a ‘17 that I have yet to photograph I was telling Chris about. I have not seen either in years. If time will ever permit!

This rifle came out of NY (Corning) in January 2007, Rich owned it for a short time and sold it to me in May 2007, - the auction had several players, including Peter kuck, but the auction stayed low (about $700) =, at least by todays standards... back then $1000 would have been some rifle. Today shitty rc total mismatch, refinished garbage pull that, though todays dollar is like the early 1922 German Mark, way things are going 1923 is just around the corner.

Thanks for the comments, Chris, Rick, Jory, and Paul!

I hope you get the time, Rick, i would love to see them! So you have Simsons from 1915, 1916, and 1917, that's quite impressive!

Great to the know the background, thanks, Paul. I got my first Gew, a bolt mismatch 1916 Danzig, in 2008 for $300. Now i wouldn't bat an eye at paying $800 for the same Gew, but at the time i was lamenting that i hadn't started collecting ten years earlier when they could be had for $100.

Very cool rifle with honest use and a lot of charm. Stock is very attractive. That cypher is crisp indeed!

While price is always a factor, I never mind "buying early" to pick up the right rifle. I am young so I've got 40+ years to appreciate them. Just the other day I saw someone purchase a double-date (1916/17) Spandau Gewehr 98 with a couple accessories for $2800 on a BIN on GB. The listing was up maybe 12 hours? Then there is of course the gray blanket bringing in $1500-$2500 on each rifle.

I always have trouble vetting German rifles online from sources I haven't used before.

Cyrus,
I had (2) 1917’s. The Prussian ‘17 that Chris posted recently was also from my collection.
Many of my rifles have been pieces that were produced by that factory throughout its existence. I have some 98b’s, BSW’s and then BCD’s. Even my SSR has a BSW stock. Also an LSR.
I don’t have any particular reason for doing so. I have one of the first and one of the last!
