Gewehr 98 Simson & Co Suhl 1916 6703c

Bought this from a board member here in the fall. It has a small cut in the barrel, which doesn't bother me, and a roughly repaired duffle cut that I thought I might be able to improve upon. I was wrong. It had been sanded long in the past and when I put a brass tube in the cleaning rod channel the sides did not line up right because of the lost wood. I put linseed oil on it and put it out of sight. Looking at it now it doesn't look terrible, but I still don't think I'll keep it, even though I love Saxon Gewehrs.

Overall it is still pretty nice. Matching but for the front band, cleaning rod, rear sight and slider, safety, cocking piece, and firing pin. The stock is beautiful (aside from the duffle cut) with very strong, clear stamps.

Here is the stock. Looks like most of the small parts are c/W

Cyrus, I think it is a very nice example, and superb photographs! I wish you could buy more rifles as your photographs are exceptional.

You are getting a lot of Simson's and this one is pretty nice also. Simson's are just hard to get in condition better than this one; like all Suhl (Saxon) makers they were used, and Simson's can be hard to find in upper grades. But of course you know this as well as anyone!

Thanks, Paul! That is exactly how I feel too. You actually made me rethink getting rid of this. Having two bolt matching 1916 Simsons is pretty cool, even if one has a few problems.

Superb photography - thanks for sharing.

Mantis great rifle and great photo skills as well. I think any Gew98 collector would be more then a happy too own a 1916 Simson & Co Suhl rifle like that. They are tough too find. Been too many shows the past few years and have yet too see one in person yet.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. Mike, I used to take photos with a Nikon camera, but for the last few years I've been using an iPhone. The only problem is that it occasionally won't focus on certain parts, but generally it works very well. Background and good non direct lighting are more important than camera.
