Gewehr 98 Spandau * Spandau 1916 1327 1

Picked this up from Chris. Damn nice Spandau Sterngewehr that’s a straight bolt mismatch, though it has some salvaged parts. The blue on it is wonderful, and it has that untouched closet fresh look. Beautiful and fascinating piece overall, it has quickly become one of my favorites.

The stock is Amberg made, you can see the c/A beneath the c/Z. There was much discussion on this aspect when Chris posted photos originally; if I read it correctly the consensus was that it was a supplied part, not unlike the Amberg receivers and trigger guards you see in Erfurt sterngewehre.

Other parts are apparent salvages. The buttplate is salvaged from a Sauer with the new number stamped over the old and suffix still on the top. The rear band is a salvage that was renumbered while the sight slider tabs are salvaged but not renumbered. Otherwise most parts have acceptance that’s either linked to Spandau or typical armorers parts.

Stock and stock metal. Bayonet lug has the suspected subcontractor logo found on armorers examples. Note the salvaged Sauer buttplate, still has the old Gews suffix.

Assembly numbers. The barrel, receiver and triggerguard are all marked with a 3. The stock has a 2 as does the rear sling swivel. There is a 34 in the stock channel but it could be a fluke. The trigger guard and floorplate have 16.
Also, the rear sight leaf has the same markings, B*, found on Erfurt rear sights and sliders, though this slider is not marked the same way. I suspected these were applied when matched with rear sight slides that feature the same markings, but I could be wrong, they could have a different meaning entirely.

Congratulations on acquiring this one! I remember Chris posting this rifle if I’m not mistaken, we had a discussion on the crown stamp on the sear. I don’t remember seeing the assembly numbers. Interesting rife!

Cyrus, this couldn't have gone to a better home. I really liked this one and the untouched condition. Only a bolt matching replacement would have dislodged it from my collection-- and that's just what happened! Glad you like caring for it as much as I did.

I was in error, the crown stamp discussion was his 1912 Spandau. But it’s still present on this one! Nonetheless a great piece!
