I’m a WW2 history nerd and new to collecting. Recently I won a black Bakelite k98 bayonet on ebay. When I received it, it wasn’t the same one in the listing, it was heavily rusted, pitted and in poor condition, the blade looked to be filed, the release button was rusted fused. The only positive surprise was that it had red bakelite handle. Which I actually like more.

After cleaning and lightly sanding offf most of the rust with oil. I believe the pitting is too much and unfortunately it has to mechanically sanded in the handle area and then maybe blue it.
I don’t want it to lose its historical value but I would only file the damaged areas. I have to look into it. BTW, ebay refunded the full value.

I would love to know any feedback, on what I should do next.? Any advise is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Eric

After looking at your pictures...as a refinisher, my opinion is it's not worth fooling with...You could very possibly spend a lot more than the value of the bayonet trying to make it right. A lot of it could be cleaned up up but it really will never be right. Depends open how far you want to go with it.
If E-bay refunded your money..leave well enough alone and lesson learned..... Never, never, never buy something from a buyer who doesn't accept returns

Did you open a case with eBay? They have a good buyer protection plan.
