SS Helmet Info Please

Hello, I am New to the forum. I bought this Helmet with a lot of mostly U.S. officer's hats and some German field caps

I know there are a lot of fakes out there and I wanted more info on this one. I have no idea if it's real or not. Any info would be appreciated

Thank you for looking

Craig.

It appears to be the infamous sham-pain ruins on an EF no-decal shell.

This is a clear fake SS helmet. Decal is a template spray painted forgery. It does resemble more like a Pocher or Quist decal on the actual runes, but has the typical "Champagne" color. I am a bit uncertain if this is a "classic" ED SS special, or someone trying to mimic his work.

Either way, if you paid good money for this helmet, you were scammed. Better return it ASAP for a refund if you can.

If we're talking about template, spray painted, then no two may be exactly the same as would fake printed decals. Now that you mention it, one rune resembles the ET maker and the other pocher or Quist.

I believe the lot # to be 1473 or 1478 clearly low enough to be a decaled EF shell. But, the runic shield is bad.

Here is a true good EF runic shield. I feel if we don't go all the way in education of owner and would be owners of SS lids we are doing no one a favor.

ef rune

shown here is the focal areas of an EF rune. As im still learning to "one look" SS decals and have struggled do so I find focusing on one small area easier that staring at the whole thing. EF shields have a rounded "break" where ET/clk have angle here. See pink highlighted areas.
Also seen is a shift in the print and the white backing can be seen along the edge.

RE Helmet

Thank you all for the info. I paid nothing for the helmet and assumed it was not real, but did not know for sure.

Is it at least a genuine WWII German helmet?

Craig.

I don't have any SS helmets, but I have used this to evaluate others posted online. It seems to be accurate.

Yes its an orig WW2 german helmet. There was a guy on GHW offering to pay 500.00 usd for a sham-pain-ruin helmet. So, Im not sure if it was a gag or not ??? Its worth at least a couple hundred IMHO.

It would be interesting to know where this helmet came from, as far back as you know.

The reason is that there have been claims of Champagne "decals" like yours existing in the 1960's....

ps - Glad you found the forum!

I believe that the fellow on GHW2 still has the ad offering to buy a Champagne Runes helmet in place. If not send me a message as I would like to add one of these to my collection of odd and useless items.
Cheers,
Mike

While the lower lot#'d EF M42s often have decals, these usually have the EF code side marked and Gothic scripted (IMO an indicator of earlier planchet completion prior to the 8/28/43 decal drop date)

When I see a lower lot# with the EF code rear marked and block scripted as here, it indicates to me later completion of earlier numbered planchets (after the decal drop date).

My theory in the lot# book is that the flat steel discs that were to become helmets were first marked with the lot number but not yet with the EF64 mark. Some of these were completed shortly after with side marked gothic scripted EF (decal era), while other numbered planchets were not completed until much later with the rear marked block script (no-decal era).

Also has more pointed shield at bottom...nice lid Wayner...

I can assume this is one of the hardest aspects of the lot arrangement. EF being one and scratching your head.

Quist being another changed lot types a lot as well.. I was recently shown two SS helmets a newbie was given before he was to purchase. I picked both up and looked at the maker stamp and handed them back and said they were bad. I never even looked at the decal.

He was shocked. He said how did you know ? One was an Hkp m42 and the other a scarce Q m42. I said neither ever existed in an SS configuration during the war so they are post war created.

Lot #'s and decal to shell relationship charts have taken a lot of the guess work out of the SS lid game. Thanks for your part in it.

Thank you - I'm don't really have much info on it. I got it from a long time collector as a questionable piece. I know they had it at least 20 years but nothing past that.

Craig.
