Very odd; I lay K88s end to end and have never seen anything like this before. It appears to be basically a shortened G88/05, retaining the G88 magazine and nosecap, fitted with either a K88 or G91 bolt assembly and a G91 stacking hook, utilising a G88 stock which has had the cleaning rod hole filled and a K88/G91-type sling slot added and a K88/G91 sight added. It appears to be fitted with a bottom sling.
Do the numbers match on all components? Any other unit markings, either on the band or buttplate?
I suspect a fantasy piece.

thanks , is it possible that this one is a shortened turk G88 with a post modification rear sight replacement ?

It could be an early Gewehr 91. They started making them in 1891, maybe they used Gewehr 88 receivers to make the first ones or some prototypes? Your receiver is dated 1890.

Maybe this link can help you? It's Russian but if you use Google translate maybe you can get something out of it.

thanks for your inputs , after some research it appears that it can't be a turkish shortened G88 rifle there is no turkish mark and on the modified rifles the G88 rear sight was kept plus the bore and casing didn't flush the upper band/front sight set , so i must agree the first answer to this thread ,it just could be a "fantasy rifle"
i've in my collec an G91 it's near identical to a kar 88 except the upper band , the piling pin and the right side receiver marking , i don't think that the firsts G91 could be fitted with G88 receivers but who knows ? nevertheless many thanks for the link (russian but the pics are top),

Amberg arsenal did rebuild some K88s using G88 receivers (so marked) but did not build either K88s or G91s (so marked) from scratch.

Telegraphen-Bataillon ?

Hi Toulon 44

It can be a modified gun for one of the Telegraphen Batallions in WW 1 .... many special troops, transport, train company's behind the lines got such special made guns or modified captured ones from other nations ....border guards in Germany used special model 88 or 91 guns untill far in the 20's.
It can be a factory modification also for one of the Baltic states. Turkye i have doubts.....
Nice gun with a big mystery,we have something more to search after !

regards Batangueno

If the price is right, I say grab it! Too cool not to...but I have no idea what pricing is like in France...

The placement of the regimental mark is odd too...

i've already seen G88 with regimental mark on the receiver like this one but only on G88 not G91 or KAR88 , in france the price is around 700 € if the rifle is matching and in good condition with the new law the prices are coming crazy ....

The gun laws are getting stricter in Europe ...:facepalm:but in Belgium ,normally the 88's are free but only if they are made before 1895.....:biggrin1:
700 €....nice price but this gun have many doubts and mystery's for who it was made....

in FRANCE the limit date is 1900 so G88 family is free as lebel etc ... after this date we can get all ww1 or 2 rifles without limit number if we have shooting or hunting licence we call this the C category , semi auto rifles must be limited to 2+1 with the magazine unremovable or transformed in manual repetition , not perfect but better than we had 2 years ago .

Here in Belgium a couple of years ago...... everything, from old military guns was free:biggrin1:, there was a list by the gun law with normally every old military gun on it untill 1945 ,just must it be under licence if you have munition for it and you want to shoot , you need a licence model 4 or 9 .
But there was a shooting with many dead people in Liege with a criminal Arab (Nordine Amrani)]in December 2011, the Minister (a woman....) saw a reason to cancelling this law ,only guns before 1895 and with black powder are now allowed.... others must be deactivated or with licence....
That guy was shooting with a stolen army gun (FAL) not with an old gun !
Semi automatic are always been under licence here.

Here's a pic of an early Gewehr 91 (CG Haenel 1891- strictly all matching #958a) :

gew91-1.jpg CG Haenel.jpg 958a.jpg

We can read Gew.91 but just above, we can see a faint marking looking like "88".
Probably germans used Gew.88 or Kar.88 receivers to produce the first Gew.91... Who knows?
