Help with Sütterlin script

My opinion would be that it says "Marsaille" and as a second thought was corrected. Written by someone who was not very practiced at writing. The pencil was sharpened with a knife after the first "l", and was probably used to correct the a to an e then the second "l" then the date.

This posted before I could change my reply to ..... "Marsaile".....

The pencil got sharpened, an additional l was added and the a changed to an e. The writer was probably unsure of the correct spelling.

Agree, thanks for the detailed answer. I don't blame the German soldier who wrote this for not remembering the exact spelling of "Marseille", the French city.
