With the help of an older friend of mine (yes, tough to read the hand writing of more than 100 years ago!) I fully got the caption. It reads „ englischer Graben kurz auf den Sturm“ what can roughly be translated as „English trench shortly after the storming“. So indeed would suggest they are dead, and the Germans attacked them.

Still with the 98a bolt open, a round clearly visible in the open magazine, suggests a real time scene, appears realistic I think.

After a short discussion with the same friend of mine: he suggested it isn't a 98a because the stripper clip adapter on these rifles are not "sticking out this much" (couldn't find a better way to describe this, but I guess you got what I wanted to say). He thinks it is either a 1910 Serbian Mauser or a 1903 Turkish Mauser. A result therefore can be the picture was taken at Gallipoli or in Palestina.

Have a look at the bolt knob. Not a Kar98 bolt.
