JP Sauer bluing technique?

Hello,

I was wondering if the experts wouldn't mind chiming in on a question that has been leaving me curious. Most of us have come to love jp sauer's unique finishing and polishing of their k98s. The question is what type of bluing was applied to Sauer rifles and parts? Was it a rust bluing process? Was it a hot bluing process like brunn? Im curious to know also if there was any transition in the bluing process between the years. Pre war vs. Early vs. Mid vs. Late. Thanks in advance

Rust blueing up to, I believe, 1938 and then hot caustic salt blue from then on, until the advent of phosphating in late 44.

PS: all manufacturers changed over from rust to caustic approximately the same time. Mauser Oberndorf would have been first, seeing they created the process.

I will just add that I have seen a few J.P. Sauer rifles up to 1940 that "appear" to be rust blued. It may be that a few were done this way to use existing capacity, or simply just well done blue jobs. But, Vulch's timeline is spot on.
