K98K JP Sauer 1940 - Original Stock Finish?

Hi guys,

A recent pickup is an all matching K98K 1940 JP Sauer.

Nice salty one, in original shape. Looks like it came straight out of the closet.

I can usually tell a sanded/cleaned stock from a mile away. This one, I am not 100% sure though… I think because it’s dirty.

This stock still has a open grain texture. With visible cartouches and stamps.

What’s everyone’s thoughts, original stock finish? Or, touched up?

I think the original finish has been messed with.

It‘s worn from use, but it looks lightly sanded to me.

Thanks guys. I was leaning to sanded. Probably a long time ago. It has gotten dirty over time. Made it hard for me to be 100% sure.

Seems maybe chemically cleaned too.. a lot of older collectors in the 80s thought bleach blonde stocks were oh-so-cool....we have the same problem with pimpshined Gew98 receivers.

This was my thought as well. A lot of those chemically cleaned stocks from back in the day now have a kind of dirty look to them.

The edges of the bolt cut out are rounded, where originally, they were sharp. This is always a giveaway that a stock has been sanded.

Generally yes. But, I’ve also handled well worn unsanded rifles with a rounded bolt cutout.

If you feel this stock, it feels like many of the other unsanded ones I’ve handled/own.

It looks like it was wooled plus use of chems, notice the grim still in the grain...
