K98k Mauser shipping crate

ax - hole
I hope nobody laughs at this, but I wanting to have a K98k shipping crate built. The same ones that the rifles were ship in when they left the factories. Don't know if anyone on here knows the dimensions and spec's on these crates? Any help would be great I think it would be cool to have one hope no one thinks I'm crazy for doing this lol. And I trust the guy building it for me too he's been building things out of wood for the past 40 years. This man can create almost anything out of wood incredible work he does.

I would love to own one as well some day and have thought about building a repro myself.

Post up pics once it's done. I'd like to see it.

I have one that's at least patterned after the originals. I'd measure it for you but it's full of stuff. Do a search, I'm pretty sure we've had this request before.

Can't vouch if this is an original crate.

Looks like a Russian 91/30 crate with 98k's in it....

There is a picture of an original crate in BBOTW....IIRC...That is one thing I have never seen is an actual German 98k crate....

Not sure where I saw it, it could have been here or another forum. I guy made a coffe table from a shipping crate. He put a row of rifles in it and had a glass top on it. If I did not have a wife or children I would have one for myself. It might shock some Married men out there but my wife does not like any of my decorating techniques. My stuff is slowly but surely ending up in the basement.

I'm in shock. No, not really. My wife would kick my a$$ if I even suggested bringing a K98k crate into the house, even if it was going into the basement.

You could get the russian K98 crate for $20 from the local importer.

I had three that ended up in the back yard bone fire...

Perfect thanks Hambone now I just need to know the dimensions and the kind of wood these crates were made off and he can start building one for me. Don't know what he will charge me yet for doing it though, he does kind of owe me a favor for doing electric work on his new wood shop for him lol. I'll keep this thread updated on how this project comes along just glad know one thought I was crazy for doing it.

Hello Warrior 1354;
Any recent up dates on you k98k crate quest ?

if you still never found the measurements , here you go....
from the out side ; 14 1/2 high X 21 3/4 wide X 49 1/2 long (37 X 55 X 126 cm ). this is not including the handles. made of quality pine , and a ton of nails (no glue).

the post war Yugo crates are exact copies , including the metal hardware as the ww2 German as they just copied the german ones they had. they hold 10 rifles typically (not 20 as mentioned else where).
measurements might vary a bit from the many k98k manufactures / assemblers.

I currently don't own one yet.... had recently thought I was buying 4 of them...... but turned out to be factory crates holding 2 M.G. 42 / M53 MACHINE GUNS !!!! WHICH I'M HAPPY ABOUT.
the hardware on these , the handles , construction is also exact to the german. these 4 crates are different in the overall measurements.

remember the partitions should have extra space around the guns for a "wool " strip , so the wood doesn't rub against wood. seen in off white color , roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

Hope this helps. jeff Harshman.

Thanks for the info appreciate it. And yes I have talked to him about building one for me but he's been so busying doing Carpenter work the past few months he hasn't had time yet. He's hoping the coming fall he might get it started for me but the way work is right now he doesn't know. He felt bad about not getting it done for me but he's got to make a living first. I told him I completely understand all of us trades have to work together just hope its not started in the winter time lol.

Reminds me of the stacks of crates we saw in teh warehouses around Sarajevo, as we inspected Bosnian/Serb/Croat cantonment sites in the late 1990s. M70s, M53s, M48s, etc. Tons of them.

I just gave away a metal crate that held P38s. I use to work at a gun shop where the owner did a lot of importing. He imported a bunch of P38s from Russia and they came in the crates. I don't know if they were originally made for P38s or if the Russians just used them. They were German though, under the paint you could see German stamps. There were wood racks inside to hold the pistols and I was trying to get enough P38s to fill it up to display in my gun room but after awhile lost interest.

2016 SOS Find

I found this 98K shipping crate at SOS yesterday. Looks original.
