Actually everything important has been said, here is just a small addition.

This topic was also mentioned in the "TL 1/1003 Vorläufige Technische Lieferbedingungen für Karabiner 98k" at annex 4 page 1.

"Serienzeichen (für je 10.000 Waffen kleine lateinische Buchstaben)" - "Serial number (small Latin letters for every 10,000 weapons)"

I have personally seen a 10,000 serial number k98k. I dont know the code/year or its authenticity but I saw it at the MAX show in Pittsburgh, PA probably 10 years ago or so. It was all high polished and the guy said it was a honor guard gun or something….along with a crazy price tag.

I know its not much concrete proof but I know I did see one then.
