Hier mein 98b
Vermutlich Anfang 1931 gefertigt.
@Loewe
A Type 6 in the serial number range at the end of the Type 5. Freudi's answer about the side rail marking could be interesting for the trends.
Mod.98. siderails (Mod.98 designation est. September 1930- these rifle are post Sept. 1930 prod.)
@Absolut
Thank you very much! I saw your SS Karabiner and will write something in the other thread. Thanks to you I found the thread about the Simson "zero" series with serial number 268.
Your two Navy Simson are extremely important for the trends and outstanding examples. I don't know your other six K98b's and if it's not too much trouble, I would be interested in the serial numbers and S-Type (you can see them in my first post) from the right side of the receiver. Then I could come up with other important questions that are relevant for the trends.
When changes occur in production, we always have an important data point. Examples are the receiver siderail designations "Gew.98", "Karab.98b" and "Mod.98". Another example is the rear sight base and in Vol. I book on page 114/115 is something written about this topic. Your Simson 1924 Sn 35 has a rear sight base type 1 (open bottom design) and your Simson Gewehr 98 Sn 5003e has a rear sight base type 2 (closed bottom design).
It's better not to use the term "closed bottom design" for the type 2, as it could lead to misunderstandings. The correct term would be "Simson design," because Simson suggested this change. The Heereswaffenamt (Army Ordnance Office) discussed this design change with the Inspektion für Waffen und Gerät Abteilung 3 and, according to a document dated May 26, 1925, gave the go-ahead for this design change.
The earliest type 2 "Simson design" rear sight base which I know is Karabiner 98b Simson 1925 Sn 9625. The owner is @chrisftk and here is the link: 1925 Simson & Co Suhl Kar98b 9625
Because of the document, we have another important data point, so we know that @chrisftk Karabiner 98b was not manufactured until after May 26, 1925.
Karabiner 98b Simson 1925 Sn 4533 still has the type 1 "(open bottom design). This design change was introduced sometime between serial number 4533 and serial number 9625.
