no feedback? Bear season opens here May 1st and I want to try to kill a boar with my RC K98. Do you have any ideas where to start? I've never even shot this rifle. Thanks.

No experience with that brand, but I have a lot of experience with Pro-Hunter (Sierra) bullets. They've given me solid results in 30-06 and 6.8 SPC II on Blacktail Deer bucks.

If you've never even shot that one, I'd think about using a rifle you know you're accurate with instead.

Agree and I hope I didn't sound reckless, but I know where two boars are denned, like right now as I type this, and I think if I ski in there for the opener and limit myself to 60 yards I can kill one. When I killed my elk the one boar ate the gut pile and I followed him to where he denned. I went in there wolf hunting and the steam hole was active from his den down under the snow and rock.

The K98 RC has grown in mystique since I picked it up spontaneously from a neighbor. Love this thing and I hijacked this thread trying to find info about ammo. Thanks.

Got it. Bear hide is tougher, so I'd probably heat up the round a bit (if you reload), and use the 175 or 180 grain bullet you mentioned. Black Bear, right?

Yeah black bear, Midway has 196gr Sellier, Bellot ammo and it looks like it'll work. I don't reload so that limits me. The rifling and bore on this K98 is really nice, I need to take a bear with this thing, lol.

I think this would be a good choice. I've fired this and PPU in both 196gr and 198gr. You should be fine, but please take a few practice shots before the kill.

be careful under 60 yards, I’ve seen black bear cover that distance faster than a person can cycle a K98 bolt. & it isn’t just their hides that are tough, they’re all muscle. when you hold a bare black bear skull in your hands, it’s amazing how small the brain case is, & then you realize there’s 15-20 lbs of jaw muscle on their head! Bone crushing power.

Black bears aren’t hard to kill. Biggest thing to remember is the vitals are further back than where you would aim on a deer or elk. Marginally shot bear are very hard to find as their hair soaks up alot of blood.

yup, mostly they’ll run away from people, but sometimes not. I recently had a scrawny runt yearling get my bird feeder (hey-its what they do in spring) but with me banging a steel trash can lid & yelling insults, it would only retreat 30 yards & stop. Not bear season here now, get .410, shoot towards bear but not AT it, moves 10 yards, stops. 3 more shells before it got the message. From previous visit’s tracks it had been on the deck, 10 feet from the wall of windows. Typically when I yell “GIT!”, critters skidaddle, but this one required extra persuasion.
