MAUSER K98k RECEIVER QUESTION - DRILLED HOLES

Why would someone drill and put screws in the side of the receiver??

Yes, this is the typical location for the installation of a Lyman peep sight, done after WW2 by many gunsmiths as most shooters were more accustomed to peep sights.
 
Thanks for your responses. Does this mean the original stock was cut to fit the peep sight? Or did it fit without modifying the stock? I'm wondering if maybe the stock is not original to this rifle. I've attached a picture.

It's a flat buttplate stock. So your rifle would need to be 41 or earlier as a general rule.
