Have just acquired all matching numbers Danzig made long carbine dated 1912. Ser No: b9813. The butt plate tang is marked 11.UL . Is this the 11th Cavalry Brigade?

Super! I guessed you would come up trumps! I will be using it Bisley tomorrow first on iron sights and later with my Original Wehrmann aperture sight. Fotos will follow in due course.

Gave the carbine a good test at Bisley on Sunday with PPU 8 X 57. Spot on with no effort. After cleaning today fitted the Original Wehrmann aperture sight ready for next outing 03APR16. Waiting for some non brass monkey weather before going out side to take fotos...

Forgot to ask: Under the 11.U is the number 161 can I assume that is simply an identity for the carbine when in a rack at the depot?

Hello,
the number behind/under the "U" would indicate to which soldier this carbine was given to.
Usually there were two numbers, each accompanied with a dot. For example 11. U. 1. 161. This would point to the 161. soldier in the first "Eskadron" (cavalry-company).
Is your rifle just numberd 11. U. 161. or maybe 11. U. 1. 61.? A picture would help a lot.

I promise I will get fotos when the weather is decent - it is too d**n cold at the moment! The marking are 11. U. with 161. below it

without having seen the picture i would think that your unit marking is from the time between 1914-1918. So its a wartime marking. These unit markings can be hard to "solve" since they are not stamped according to a "unit marking regulation". In this case shown by the fact of the missing Eskadron number.
The actually order was to stop unit marking any weapons with the beginning of the war. Some of the regimental gunsmiths didnt follow this order to make sure their regiment was still equipped with the "right" weapons.
But nevertheless your marking would indicate that this K98AZ was issued to the 11. Ulanen-Regiment. I know of two more wartime unit markings from the 11. U-R. These are on S84/98 n.A. bayonets.
1) 11.U. 667 from 1917
2) 11.U. 617 from 1918
Why you would find a wartime unit marking on a pre war carbine... no idea.
