Oberndorf target rifles

I was digging through the collection last night for another purpose and ran across these two. Apologize in advance for my mediocre photo skills. Both are 8.15 x 46R and both in theory are repeaters although I don't have any of the ammo and have not tested them. The first one (Mauser Banner) was a duffle cut rifle off of GunBroker missing its cut foreend from several years ago. With the help of an Argentine donor stock and a kind fellow board member it is back on its feet.
Note the use of an apparently previously rejected part (cocking piece). This one was manufacured late (1940 timeframe).

The second is similar but different due to the Tirol-Vorarlberg Standschuetz Verein markings. I am guessing this one was manufactured in the late 1930's.

I have rifle number 20810,TSTV marked, very close to yours. Mine still has an event sticker on the butt stock. It must have been going to be a big event with two postage stamps being issued to commemorate the event which was to be held in Innsbruck in July of 1944! JH

I've been tracking the serial numbers of these puppies for a while now. They fall into a fairly tight serial range. I have recorded two sets of consecutive numbers.
Thought you might find this interesting - Earlier this year, #20742 was shown for sale at joesalter.com and priced at $3,995.00 An all matching, near excellent example and only 2 digits away from yours.

"Wehrmanngewehr der Tiroler Standschützen"

For the past few years, Joe W. and I have been compiling the serial numbers of these hard-to-find rifles. By the process of extrapolition, it appears these rifles were produced in their own exclusive serial range of approximately 1,000 rifles. To date, we show a low number of 20018 which appeared in a Hermann Historica auction, with a high number of 20882 offered in the December 2010 Rock Island Arsenal auction.
We currently have 31 rifles in our database, including one set of consecutive numbers and two sets of triplicates. If you have, or know of one of these rifles, please post the serial number. If yours shows up as a consecutive number to another, I will pass the info back to both owners. Thanks guys....

I was corresponding with Jon Speed regarding the T.St.V. Mauser target rifles and I suggested that perhaps the shooting club requested the logo, initials and serial number on the chamber to assist in inventory identification at the club storage area. For whatever reason, Mauser complied with their request but found that the full 120 xxx serial number was too long for the chamber.So..... they dropped the 1 from the number and we now have a 1000 gun special range from 20 000 to 21 000. Walther did the same thing but for a different reason on their last PPs approaching the 1 000 000 range. Why not here?

It would help if any Mauser Wehrmanngewehr 8.15 x 46R rifle serial numbers and PROOFS could be reported here. 123 723 was reported above with an E/N proof, indicating acceptance after January 15, 1940. Perhaps with more numbers we might be able to narrow the line of change from Crown/BUG to Eagle/N.

Any ordinary non-T.St.V. 8.15 x 46R target rifles in the 123 xxx range of course would sink my theory, but that's research for you.

Necro-thread revival in honor of Memorial Day. I am adding photos of another BUGN proofed, 1930's version of a Mauser Oberndorf Wehrmanngewehr. This one has a visible duffle cut between the bands. I have not had it out of the stock, but the difference in appearance between the stock and the handguard made me uncomfortable enough that I pulled off the handguard to check its numbers. With any duffle cut rifle, you always have to worry that whoever reassembled the rifle did not have all the original parts by the time he put it back together again, as it means the rifle had definitely been disassembled. The handguard matched and is marked 35 then 2244 (last 4 digits of the serial number). The "35" is a slightly different size than the last four digits and I am assuming that it means the handguard was completed in 1935. I think the rifle was more likely assembled in the late 1930's though.

A few more photos of the BUGN proofed Wehrmanngewehr, including the numbering of the handguard and a better shot of a previously rejected extractor collar.

This one is 1002 numbers earlier than the later example I posted in the first post of this thread but has different bands and different proofing.
