Parts Rifle

I just purchased a 98 a couple of weeks ago which had been sporterized. It appears to be a "parts" rifle, (No. on receiver and bolt don't match), however that doesn't bother me; it does what I want it to do and doesn't look bad. I think the receiver and barrel DO belong to each other, everything else...? But I digress. There is something funky on the end of the barrel. Something I've never seen before. It looks like a it may be a compensator or flash supressor. Also looks like it may be missing something. Can anyone tell me what this is?
Thanks

More photos would help but from the get-go: It's a post-war sporterized rifle on a war-time receiver that has been drilled and tapped. BYF indicates it is a Mauser production, and 44 represents the year.

The thing on the barrels looks like a complete aftermarket piece. without more photos, I'd presume the barrel is not proper either and probs a post-war or modified one.

Stock does not look stock from what you've shown. Could easily be a modified stock originally to it, or a completely different one.

If anyone wishes to correct me lmk.

I found out today that the barrel is the original that, of course, received some machining (to ease the step-downs) and it was re-blued, to a point. The thing on the end is part of a Maxim Silencer base - missing the suppressor end. I've removed it and now I'm stuck with threading on the end of the barrel. I need to find out what the TPI (or TPM) so I can install a muzzle brake. Pretty sure it's metric; "Threads Per Millimeter".

actually, metric threads are expressed as “millimeters per thread” as in M8x1.25, M6x1.0 etc.

Lots of GI bring backs were turned into sporters back in the day. I still remember reading in an issue of the American Rifleman a detailed article on reworking k98 war trophy's. Everything from refinish & re stocks, some re barreled up to heavy big game calibers. Some great work, no bubba's but makes you wonder how many great examples were ruined from a collectors POV
