Price of non-matching 98k sniper.

I am thinking about buying a non matching, shooter sniper (not sure on mounting style yet), but have almost no reference on price point for one. I was originally going to get a shooter g43, but remembered I wanted to shoot in the vintage sniper match at Camp Perry this summer, and the only sniper I have is my scoped SVT. So does anyone have a ballpark price range for one? Or an example of past sold ones?
Thanks

Closet finds are getting harder to find. You should be able to get a zf-41 (sharpshooter) with or without optics for $1000-2000
G/K43's are also a decent option but looking at about $4-6K for a rifle with original mount/scope MM to the rifle.
LSR's are then probably your best bet and are some of the most common closet find snipers out there. They are found with and without mounts and may run $2000-6000 for a build.
SSR's sometimes pop up and then IMHO the rest are harder to find and generally more expensive.

The only three that I have are a zf-41, SSR and LSR and some G/K43's that I have placed original optics/mounts on. I actually managed to pay $900-1500 for each K98 rifle and then had to source optics and mounts.

There was a nice bnz single claw for sale in the traders forum.

Generally an all matching example will be north of 10k

The LSR is actually what I was most interested in! How would I go about trying to find one? From what I have seen from my research, people don’t usually post for sale.

Sniper

Mis-matches are usually worth the sum of their parts. Take an BCD 4 LSR for example, which is the easiest in my opinion. You can usually find all the parts if you search for a few years. They pop up. A barreled receiver will cost $1000 to $2000. A bolt with LSR key safety will cost $300 to $800. An original LSR scope rail and screws $700 to $1000. Original Sniper checkered butt plate $800 to $1000. A stock you will have to cut for scope rail will cost depending on originality and condition. Original LSR stocks are rare and very expensive if you can find one that is not sanded. Original stocks usually go to matching examples that have stocks that someone cuts and tries to call it original or sporter stock replacements. The rest of the parts maybe $200. Also a scope and mount is needed. Just depends on type and condition, but cost is anywhere from $1500 to $2300 for a BEK scope and 5 digit mount. If optics are bad then $300 to clean and put a new reticle in scope plus postage and insurance to a guy who fixes it. Or maybe you will just luck into one for sale that nobody knows about.

If you are looking for a K98k sniper just for shooting then I would build a fake High Turret. It will be much cheaper and faster. I built one last year for about $1500.

Repro.

Yes of course if you want a repro. they are cheaper. Can you shoot a repro. at Camp Perry? I always thought it might be fun to go there. What do you have to do to qualify to shoot there? Might be interesting to try someday.

Non scoped Matching k98s are going for 1500-2500 depending on condition/maker. Finding a legit zf41 without a scope is easier said than done. It will obviously be more expensive than a normal k98. LSRs: as Brian pointed out, would take a considerable sum to cobble together. Matt offered you an easier, cheaper alternative with a HT setup.

I would highly discourage using a real k98 sniper in a match, as they are expensive and risks damage or loss to already hard to find parts, even if a mis-match. Guns like Springfield, and Enfield or Mosins are either fairly common or high end replicas and are easy to come by.

I built a High turret from a sporter with a near pristine bore that had been previous drilled and tapped. With some good stock fitting now can shoot just under an inch in a vice, and about 1.5 to 2 inches with my shooting at 100 yards. All the parts and scope plus smithwork and shipping ran about 1,450.

So it'd be far cheaper and no real risk of loss for a weapon that would run probably even better.

I definitely would shoot it, but I also would have wanted it to be part of my collection, being original and all. I guess I will just shop around as I get the money together. What rifle would you use to build this? A sporterized bolt mm?

I have never shot there either, but as far as I can tell you can just show up. Yes you can shoot a repro.

This is closer to the prices I see and have to pay. The sum of the parts can be considerable.

I have never seen even a ZF41, matching rifle no scope, sell less that $3k unless there was an issue. Matching regular riles are $2k ish so real ZF41s cost more.

My RC and gun smithing costs on my HT were about what Matt paid for his plus about that much again for Robert S. scope mount and screws. If you can buy one near that cheap jump on it. I got a LSR repro for about that much about 10 years ago. The repro scope came apart on the second trip to the range. The rest of the RC it was built on, and the repro mount, were good to base a shooter on.

Yes Brian, the repros are OK for CMP Vintage Sniper Matches but there are limits in the rules. Check CMP for the details. Cheapest rifle to use is a PU. German wise, the cheapest to use is the repro ZF41s and next was the LSR and SSR repros. Last I heard you could use a Weaver K-4 for your scope, which keeps down the cost.

This is the best option, IMO. BTW, is Robert Spielauer still selling his HT mounts?

High Turret

There was a bolt mis-match BYF 44 High Turret on Gun Broker for around $5000 in January 2017. No scope. Otherwise nice. Had a Sauer HT or Sauer LSR Sniper Bolt.

Any suggestions on where to start with this if I go this route?

I would start with a RC byf43 or byf44. Find some HT mounts and decide what kind of optic you want, or can afford. Read up on the snipers and ask questions. We have several guys here who a world class experts on K98k snipers. I am not one of them.

If you want a replica, Joop on gunboards has a SSR shooter complete and ready to shoot just reduced to $1550. Hard to build one for that IMO.

+1. This is where a new collector should start. Buy a reproduction to satisfy you while you research for an original. Be very patient.
