I have a few things im looking to add to the collection but could use a little advice on what to pay for them-

Original WW2 German canteen- what kind of price range are these and I assume they will have the makers marks / year stamp?

Original K98 ammo pouches- what is a good price for these?

thank you

glad to help BT. Ideally you'll want a canteen where all components match. The neck of the bottle will be stamped with a code and date, such as "MN 43" and so will the straps, usually the cup if it is metal, the straps, and when you unsnap the wool cover, it will be ink stamped on that inside seam with the snaps. Ammo pouches are stamped on the back, but beware of postwar pouches stamped to make "matching pairs". A huge number of pouches have been found in Eastern Europe I believe, so they can be found reasonable. You may be able to even find a nice set for $50 for both. Look on the inside and make sure the dividers are there as well. Many times these were torn out to allow use of different ammo and clips. I may have a spare nice matching canteen somewhere if you can't find one. It's a '44 date, steel with matching steel cup. I'd want $100 for it, but I'd have to check what I paid.

Thanks for the heads up on the pouches TA!

I looked at the Rguns pouches, observations: They are typical Russian/Ukraine black painted over the rivets for storage. That will come off. They look a little nappy and they don't say whether they still have the dividers in them, which may be torn out. I believe you are going to get a grab bag. You may get a mint pair, you may get a nappy worn out smushed pair. Personally, I'm particular about my ammo pouches for collecting and am happy to pay about twice that for a mint, nice, complete, marked example. Anyone received any of the Rguns pouches?

Ham,

I have sifted through the bins of typical russian import pouches at the big show. Lots of pouches to go through for $20/ea.
I was able to get most of the years, even an AB44 marked pouch.
These, however, are beat to hell, water damage, musty, dark, smashed, ect.....
That is the typical condition of the imported pouch that I see selling at the bigger shows.

I was at Rguns and bought their pouch from their storeroom.
These are not the same as the ones I described above. They are not dirty, beat, smushed, moldy, water damage, ect...
These look to be un-issued, or as close to be compared to the common imported pouches.

I ordered a whole handful of them after doing a small sample order. It really is grab-bag, and I think my large order suffered in quality compared to the small one. I ended up with three "early" pouches (1937, 1941, early 1942) and the rest were stamped with those enigmatic factory codes. Some of them have the dividers intact, but they are missing from most.

How can I clean off the black paint without damaging the leather? Any suggestions?

By the way, F350, if you'd like a nice pair of these captured pouches, I can send them to you for what I paid for them. I just wanted to pick a few favorites out of them and figured I'd let go of the rest.

EDIT: Seems Turbo posted while I was typing this up. Yes, these pouches are in nice cosmetic condition. Only one had rust on the ring and all of them have retained their form well.

It comes off easy, a stiff nylon brush or a plastic pointed scraper should take it off. Certainly acetone will. I'd be careful not to make it worse though, perhaps I'd simply leave it on.

thanks for all the info everyone i didnt realize this thread was still going on.

ill keep you all in mind for the offers, i tend to try to get the early war stuff ( get in line, right? lol )

I am starting to feel like i need to make a display, like a mannequin / repro uniform, but with original medals and field gear.
