Rarity of G33/40

I have been thinking about trying to get my hands on a G 33/40 but I have never even held one let alone seen one in person. Gun shows in my areas are definitely lacking in this area. Even k98’s are very scarce and usually in pretty rough shape if found. So I am wondering how often one comes across G 33/40 in person and if so what are the price ranges.

I picked up a 33/40 bolt m/m, otherwise nice rifle, non-import in original condition for about $1150 (which is why I bought it) last month. New collectors have been primarily focused on K98s and have driven the price up into the clouds in the last 10 years or so, at least from my observation. The 33/40, 29/40, G-24t all used to fetch higher prices by at least 50% over a comparable K98. So, in the current market I would humbly recommend you use the K98 market price as your measuring stick. If you find a 33/40 any where near the same price based condition as a K98, buy it. I recall in 1993 buying an all matching 1940 AX code K98 for $400 and a bolt m/m Dot 42 33/40 for $425 if that tells you anything about how prices have trended over the decades. I'm pretty sure you could buy two bolt m/m 33/40's for what that AX is now worth at market price. At some point the 33/40 may regain its old position due to rarity and newer collectors learning more about it as well as the 29/40, 98/40, G-24t, etc.

There are always a number of 33/40s available on the internets all the time. Most are raggedy and overpriced or as shown recently, some are humped and overpriced. Occasionally good deals are found. For a matching example expect to pay $2200-3750, reasonable retail, for a nice original, depending upon code and date, etc. For a mismatch bolt example, I find our old rule of thumb from the 80s still applies: mismatched bolt = x .5. Of course, there are various carnival barkers, wingnuts, etc., on Gunbonker and scurrying about with asinine ad campaigns of carnie foolishness trying to swindle and hoodwink the unknowing. Ignore these listings. Good hunting, be patient, have your cash ready to move quickly.

Thanks all for the input. Sounds like I will just have to keep throwing that net out there and hope to catch one.

I imagine the closest I'll ever come
to having one is the G33/40 stock I
have owned since 1964! If I had the
handguard the stock would be complete.
I should just trade it for a K98 stock
an forget about a G33/40.

Buffalo Gun Center is listing a bolt m/m on Gunsinternational right now. I've been to their physical shop before and they're tools. But, maybe you could beat them up on it as they're going out of business.

Here is a few of mine

Hold onto it, maybe one day you’ll find the matching barreled action.

I have a matching G33/40 with sling I got years ago, paid a lot for it then. I still own it - hard to find an original that is not messed with.

I would say the prices on the G33/40 are high right now as well. I have seen them at $4000 (Matching and Collector Grade) after all fees and taxes. Original cleaning rods and sight hoods are really expensive as well. I have seen those at $250 to $300 from Norway. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.

I bought this one a couple of years ago. It was totally disassembled but was all there with the exception of the cleaning rod and sight hood. I was very happy with it for the price.3F31BEBF-FFC4-4E58-A925-18E92A54F6F6.jpegEDEC0944-8108-4524-94BC-DCF3616ACC5C.jpeg0C68458E-180F-4C29-B46E-E8E0FC4ECA8E.jpegED9027EC-3D69-4C26-91F5-DC89A3F19BC7.jpeg
