RESEARCH PROJECT - Imperial reworked 98 Rifles and Carbines

What I’d like to do is start a thread showing how various facilities reworked Imperial 98 rifles and carbines. I find theres not much out there on this topic. Like what are the traits of a Hannover rework vs Koblenz or say a factory rework. For example what does numbering look like in some of these depots? Perhaps 88 rifles and carbines could be a project too. I will add a couple of my own rifles in the following posts and I invite you all to add your reworked rifles and information. Thank you in advance.

Here’s an Ingolstadt build on a 1907 Spandau receiver. All of the parts you’d see numbered on a factory Gew 98 are completely numbered down to the screws and the parts look to be mostly Amberg. The stock lacks an acceptance cypher on the right side of the butt like factory guns.

Great idea, Marc. Here is the little bit that i had on reworks. Maybe we can add to it and try to keep it updated.

Reworked Gewehre can be broken into two categories: Repairs and Rebuilds. Repairs often contain a few replacement parts, usually renumbered to the receiver. Rebuilds are typically major overhauls, and may consist of all new parts added to a salvaged receiver. The buttplate of a reworked Gewehr should tell who did the work. This list of reworked rifles is organized by buttplate stamps.

There are three major types of bolt re-numbering seen on imperial reworks/rebuilds:

The first, and seemingly the most common (though this may be anecdotal) if a simple line through the old serial number and a new number stamped on the bolt flat. An example of this is below:

The second type of renumbering is seen typically in cases where there is no room on the bolt flat for a new SN (though not always!). The rework SN is stamped on the ball of the bolt handle. This can be seen below:

Finally, the last type of renumbering is the scrubbing and re-stamping of the bolt flat. This seems to be less common, but has been observed on many rifles. The level of scrubbing varies-- in some cases, the SN suffix of the old bolt is not fully removed. An example of this can be seen below:

I modified the title a little, to fit in with the more recent formats, and "stickied" the thread.

I like the subject, though at least one of you three need to decide who is to take direction and continue developing and updating the project. Whomever is decided to maintain it let me know if you need it edited in anyway.

Here's another Danzig rebuild:

And a couple Rastatt:

And another Koblenz

That's just a couple that I thought of. I've got a couple dozen more at least that we can fill in some of the depot numbers with.
