RESEARCH PROJECT - Mod. 71 and Mod. 71/84 - Craig Brown

This one was a sad case indeed... Bubba went and hacked up a matching IG 71... sold for under 200 bucks on Broker last week

Still, given the extreme rarity of Suhler 71 rifles, worth documenting.

1874 Sp&Sr IG71 SN 1762 (sporterized, unclear if BP flat is marked)

Honestly if it's something that could be stripped off I'd half be tempted at $200. But then I'm a sucker for restoration projects. The trimmed barrel is the real bummer, and what would probably keep my wallet in my pocket.

Chris, good catch! Important catch because rarity & the value filling the data gap (first 1874 and early prod./serial value... a shame such a rarity was so abused, but at least it survived it all)

A couple 71-84 to report:
Danzig 1887 dated. Serial# 3125q. Unit mark: 50.R.E.3.148.
WMO 1887 Dated Serial# 8136A Unit mark: 119.R.E.2.48

Added where appropriate, I think CB would have been pleased with the progress we have achieved, especially in unit progression and the signs developing among unit issuance and grouping... Carter, Noll coupled with these attributions will come in handy for a future researcher.

**not to mention those who contribute to the continued existence of this forum!

Speaking of CB, I was in Boston last month and stopped by the museum he was the former curator of (First Corps of Cadets) they had a little display devoted to him. The sale of his collection allowed them to employ a curator indefinitely.

Wow, that's a hell of a legacy to leave behind. I had no idea he endowed a position like that.

I was unaware of these details, very pleased you visited and shared these details of his endowment. A great man and collector (researcher)...
