Roast My 1941 K98 (Just Kidding) - Sharing My Find and New To WWII Guns - Could Use Some Knowledge/Help :)

I purchased this K98 Ar 41 from a Gunsmith Shop yesterday. I am quite certain Russian Capture.
1) Dear lord let it be legit.
2) I am banging my head against the wall on the proper ammo to buy for it as I do intend to shoot it but not a ton.

The barrel has a marking on bottom under the front sight stating KNOX TN 8mm (Realized I forgot that photo).

So would I be safe to look into 8mm JS ammo for it?

Final pic has byf marking on the trigger / mag assembly.

The stock has 866 carved on the left side but bottom of gun stock is a 4 digit different #.

Thankyou for any help / insight into what you see and hopefully it's a decent addition to the photos collection on here and helps others!

Welcome, you’ve found ‘the right place’. Though it may sometimes seem like rifles get roasted for fun, no one here really enjoys telling someone that their ‘treasure’ is really a turd, or that they spent too much for what they got. Sounds like your motives are good, so as long as its safe to shoot (& probably IS) good move!

Ammo: buy regular grade commercial ammo, unless there’s nothing else available, skip the “match grade” it goes for $2/shot ! If you can find it, buy PPU aka Privi Partizan, usually around $25 for 20 rounds now. If you’re just makin* holes in paper or cans, buy whats available, fmj 198 grain or hp/sp 180 grain for hunting. 8mm Mauser, 8x57 JS or IS but NOT JRS, which is rimmed like a .303 Brit or 30-30 Winchester. For limited shooting, don’t bother with mil surp corrosive ammo, as it requires special cleaning methods. Many will recommend Sellier & Bellot, excellent Czech made ammo, but it’s a bit hotter than ppu or the US brands so I personally don’t prefer it as I don’t shoot at longer ranges. Your $, your choice.

Have Fun!

Yes a very typical Russian capture k98k. The soviets assembled these out of large piles of random parts. So none of the original german numbers will match. These russian capture k98ks are collectible in there own right. I like it!

It shoots 8mm mauser. Surplus 8mm ammo is the cheapest to shoot.

Welcome to the forum.

Thankyou all for the Welcome and advice thus far. @Muncher 1953 Yes they definitely have the peened out symbols. In my research before I found you guys (Thanks to the Youtuber Hickok45 for shouting the forum out in his K98 vid), I ran across some history of negativity toward the RC ones. I aimed for a smile or a chuckle at least on the title.

My main thought on this was actually a bit of a relief it's not a rare one that I'd seal away and never want to grace with carbon deposits lol.
At the same time I had viewed yall's "Spot a fake" thread and prayed not the opposite end of the spectrum.
@Bob in OHIO Noted sir! From the sound of it I might put one of those rubber 12 gauge shot gun dampeners on the end. I'm not blessed with a sizeable cushion before bone on the shoulder lol.

Looks like an RC that someone prettied up. Stock was stripped of the shellac, maybe some metal refinishing to remove the electro pencil marks? Should be a good shooter.

I actually had a k98 just like this, same bluing and straw bolt, turns out it was a post war czech re-build. Not a Russian Capture, thats what i’d put my money on. Mine was made in Radom Poland, here’s pics for reference. At some point in time your rifle was legit, nothing to roast!!!!
