Here is a rifle that I have had for a while. It is all matching and the stock has a great look to it, I think. It has pretty good bluing for a early Sauer. The front sight base was cut for a hood at some point in its life. There is a stable crack in the stock near the recoil lug in the right side. I photoed the crack and the inside of the stock where the crack would be. Please comment on anything..... would the crack in the stock prevent anyone of you guys from firing it? I don’t plan on shooting but would like thoughts on the crack. Also dose the sight base being cut affect the value on these early rifles for anyone?

Rifle looks good. The early front sight base being cut for a hood appears to have been done by an armorer when the rifle was
in for some inspection/minor repair. TO me it would not affect value at all.

thanks for posting, I really like the early rifles.

I’m fascinated by the amount of obvious hand work with regard to the in letting in the second picture. Is this common for an early saucer?

Cool rifle Jory, but I think you're begging for trouble if you take it to the range.
By the way, what's the waff on the front sight base?

Yep... probably not going to fire this one. Sight base is E/359, pic 14 on the opening post I believe

Rifle looks even nicer in person. Didn't even notice the crack when I looked at it Jory.

The guys are gonna kill me for saying this, but if it were mine I'd have to repair it and shoot it. However I'd have to think long and hard about the absolute best way to do it.:happy0180:

Jory, unfortunately with that crack there is no option to fix it besides selling it to me dirt cheap.

:happy0180:I like it a lot ! :happy0180:

How many pre-war 98k's do you own now ?

If you shoot it, it would better be with some mildly reloaded ammo.

As you have not taken a pic of the buttplate, I guess there's no RFV or no number like on mine (attached pic), correct ?

Here is the buttplate, no RFV. The answer to how many pre-war K98k.... not enough as they are my favorite

Nice rifle. If you need to shoot a k98 take one of the others in your safe. I think you have enough other’s to choose from 😉😝! The channel on the sight should not matter to anyone. My thoughts anyway. Larry
