The body of Panzer Ace Kurt Knispel was already found in Czech

Wow that's incredible! Thank you for sharing that information and pictures. I've never given much thought to exhuming the bodies of soldiers that fought in WW2 whether they were German or American. I didn't think it would be possible to know the location of their last battle since I doubt many records survive and there wouldn't be civilians around to tell the location. Thanks again.

70 Years later

This Day but 70 Years ago died Kurt Knispel.

For Kurt to die with only 10 days to go before the end of the war, having survived through so much combat, is truly tragic.

No . Truly tragic is someone like Wilfred Owen..one of the greatest poets of the great war. Whom died in the last hours of the last day of the war in a useless attack ordered from above. That was truly tragic.

Stana,

I wasn't a member of this forum when you started... I built a TigerII in honor of Kurt 40 years ago and never got to the bottom of how the war ended for him. Thanks for posting and playing a part in his story.

After all the trash talk over Wittmann I thought for sure that train was coming this way! Thanks to everyone that contributed... All those Tigers together had to be one amazing sight to behold...

RIP Knispel

Trash talk......yeah zeig heil toadies.

There is something truly pitifully wrong with anyone who calls fellow collectors, persons he does not know, vile names, or casts aspersions on why they can respect a worthy opponent, while NOT approving of the ideology of the foe.

Why collect artifacts from that period, if those very artifacts represent, and are in fact, tangible relics of an ideology you despise ?

Frankly, IMHO, a person who does this is beneath contempt, and a first class hypocrite.

eye witness of Knispel's death

Hi Guys,
The Story is going on!!!
Knispel 's radio operator Dr. Rudolf Barth is still living in Germany. He contacted us after TV broadcasting about Knispel's body found in German TV.
He was eyewitness of Knispel's death. He gave us unbelievable details. According him, Knispel was killed at 30.4.1945 when he was leaded his tank from panzer turret by shrapnel. After death of Knispel, this panzer was over taken by Feldwebel Skoda, next German Panzer ace. After few hours was Skoda killed same way. When he leaded panzer from turret!!
Dr. Barth promised to visit us, if his health agree and show us when it all happened. His mind is very clear and open.
We are preparing article to history magazine. It will be in English too. I will send it.

Stana, this is awesome! I'm glad you found an eye witness who spent the final hours with Kurt Knispel. I'm glad to hear that people from the area where Knispel was born and raised still remember and respect him after so many decades. He was not only a superior tank commander but also a great soldier, achieving a lot in his short life. And a renegade who didn't always get along well with authorities. Are there any good books published about the life and death of Kurt Knispel?

Damn...would not have wanted to cross paths with him in a tank over that 48 hour period.

For 8x 57 IS:

Yes, there is cemetery for German soldiers in Brno.

Hello Stana,

I know that cemetery. When Kurt Knispel was found, my fiance translated the news for me. She contacted the anthropologycal museum and asked if he is already buried and never got an answer. I was the last time in October in Brno when we visited her family(she is from Kohoutovice).

Greetings,
Stephan
