Transitional VZ-24, or 'proto-G24(t)'?

I just acquired this one yesterday. A buddy told me that a friend of his had a 'old WWII rifle' he wanted to off-load and knowing a bit about my collecting interest, he put me in touch with his friend. In a nutshell, we agreed on a price, which was,...wait for it...
Firewood.

I live on property, and after helping to load nearly a cord of my split oak into his truck, I got this in exchange. This has some typically German aspects to it like the blued bolt and removed/plugged wrist swivel, along with early G.(24)t characteristics. The WaA607 stamps on the right of the receiver, and toe and right side of the butt stock are what I understand to be more typical of early G.24(t) production, before the use of WaA80 associated inspectors.

The VZ-24 dual mount sling swivel was retained, instead of removing the bolt loop as seen on G(24)t rifles. The entire rifle is a mismatch, with only the bolt parts having matching numbers to each other. The bolt handle is not matching, and the knob has what looks like a Polish eagle (?).

The left side receiver rail has its markings defaced for some reason, with a three digit serial number stamped over it. The bore is surprisingly nice. It didn't take much to clean it, and besides a bit of throat erosion, is otherwise strong.

Ideas? Opinions?
Best,
Pat

There was a transition period early in G24t production where left-over pre-war vz24 parts (including receivers and stocks) were used. Not a prototype, just an early production piece.

How the receiver marked on top?

Hi RyanE,
There's nothing on the top of the receiver. It's not been scrubbed, just completely blank. If it was scrubbed, they took pains to polish it and smooth it out, so I doubt if it was ever stamped with anything at all.

Very cool, thanks for the link, Ryan! These are interesting variants with very neat features.

The earliest G.24(t)'s were blank receiver ring with no letter suffix and with Nazi firing proofs. Otherwise they looked like German rebuilt Vz-24's.

This, but also the early black receiver 24(t)s had the side sling cut in the stocks too, which most all Vz.24 mods did not have.

Your pics are awful small, what is the serial on this one? Marked on the stock anywhere? It's very similar to mine, i need to update the photos. I suspect yours is a bit later by serial as the one I have has 1 E/607 on the left and one on the right.

Mrfarb,
If you'd like, I can reply with larger pics. Just let me know...

Pat

As requested...Just click on the photo to enlarge.
The left receiver area on which the serial has been stamped was obviously modified, probably to remove a previous marking (Czech 'E' Lion/number, maybe?):

Unfortunally only the first picture should be of interest, not good visible details probably 235 serial, any Eagle proofs?, i dont believe there was any czechoslovak E lion proofs.

Thank you Andy,
You're correct, the serial number is 235. Even with a better picture I don't think anything else would be visible, it's been effectively obliterated.
