unfired bnz 43 single rune?

I think the rune is probably OK. I've owned quite a few of these and the rune stampings varied greatly.....some heavy, some light, some weren't even centered. The only oddity is that the lower "arm" of the rune seems a little longer than the top arm. Could be a photographic illusion.

I have no problem at all with the box or paperwork. There was no requirement to list serial numbers at the time. Quite often, the GI concerned made out his own paperwork, and then had it signed by the unit officer concerned. That's appearently what happened here. Two things about the rifle leap right out: that blued butt plate, and a stock that is worn at the edges and rather thin around the receiver ring. It's hard to tell, but the butt plate screws may well be untouched. It's possible that the butt plate got wiped down with cold blue.

It's a reblued, fabricated piece, probably appropriate metal, though those "Steyr" numbering dies are available. With the proper screwdrivers buttplate screws can be removed without showing evidence of removal.

Looks like the bidding kinda fizzled out on this one in the last couple of days. The high bidder's probably done some research and is now hoping that someone tops his bid in the next day or so.

:biggrin1: My bet is the bidding won't go higher, then will the "winner" take delivery?

Have no fear, there are bidders waiting in the wings to pick up this for their collection, guys that wouldn't trust a thing you internet armchair experts say. In fact, right now he's probably reading these forums happy that none of you are going to bid on his prize, or hoping your rantings against it will help his bidding. How do I know? I've communicated with just this type of guy in the past.

Many months ago I had the opportunity to purchase a 33/40 from a person I had dealt with many times. I wasn't particularly knowledgeable about them and took a look at the contract section of this forum. I saw the very rifle I was interested in listed as a turd. I contacted a few of the ranking members and confirmed that it was one in the same. I am so thankful to Mike and Ryan for their quick feedback. It saved me quite a bit. If the person buying this "original" rifle chose or chooses not to research a possible purchase then they are due for an expensive lesson in how to eat your pride. I don't fancy myself an expert in anything aside from paying taxes. To a relative novice such as myself this rifle didn't appear in the least to be unissued or unmolested.

I'd still like to see the barrel under the woodline. There's a chance that it's not the original barrel, that would be a crying shame to not even ask for those photos when you are bidding that high and the gun has that many questions.

cmvstudioprops, what kind of handle is that? Why would they want a humped, reblued, $2900 plus K98 for a studio prop?

Mike,

That picture made me laugh out loud! There is no point that a Charlie Sheen photo can't illuminate.

To me it looked like all of the metal on this one was legit except for that blued butt plate and screws. There was a real disconnect between the condition of the metal and the stock.

cmvstudioprops, is almost always the first bidder on almost every k98 I see for auction on Gun Broker. especially the lower-priced ones. I have NEVER seen him win one, or even bid that high for that matter. He's always out of the game when high bid crests $400-500 or so. Not sure why he went for this one. very out of character as far as I can tell.
