Unit Marking on M1898n/A

Hey all,

I've picked up a number of interesting marked bayonets over the years. This one was a recent find. Bayonet is an '06 Erfurt. By my read the scabbard is marked to the II Seebattalion out of Wilhelmshaven. I'm not sure about the cancelled "E" though. Anyone have any thoughts or input?

The original unitmarking reads as the II. Ersatz-Seebataillon. The I. and II. Ersatz-Seebataillon were only mobilized for a very short period in 1900/1901 during the boxer rebellion. After the war in China was over the Ersatz-Seebataillons were demobilized again and the weapons were given to the "regular" I. and II. Seebataillons. They simply crossed out the E as seen with your scabbard. Pretty rare navy marking. Congratulations.

Thanks Vincent-- I thought maybe Ersatz, but my mind went to WWI and completely forgot about the Boxer Rebellion.

It's been a good year for bayonets. My previous two purchases were SW Africa Schutztruppe. I never thought I'd find one, let alone two marked colonial pieces.

Very nice kS.98 pieces. A favorite of mine as well. There is a reference book specific to the kS.98 which should be published later this year or early in 2020.

Those are some great looking bayonets Chris very happy to see you were able to get them for your collection. Now if I could only just find one Colonial service marked blade for my collection and you found three good for you buddy!
