Görtz and Bryans covers aspects of all three eras, including the Reichswehr period when R=Reiter/Rider, but Imperial era such distinctions are more specific, Hussars, Dragoons, etc.. The "R" usually means an infantry regiment, bold for a line regiment, incursive a reserve IR.

This rifle appears to be a c-block, which would be a new high for Amberg, - currently the high does go into the c-block, but only marginally and even then it is a report. I do not suppose the owner stated the serial number? It would be useful to at east know how far into the c-block this goes, it looks like the serial could be a 6000 or 8000 c-block. A considerable jump over known production.

thanks to both of you to have lighted me about the marking , loewe , the owner has sent me this info , S/N 26xx c .i hope that in the future we'll have other pics after the cleaning job .

Absolutely it does, especially with unit markings, which tend to group.Though this is less prevalent among G98's, because so few have been recorded, but it shows better among Kar.98a production.

Thanks!

Found in an attic would love to hear any background history about it. If by chance would you give the details on were in France it was found? Maybe the location where it was at could have been part of France that Germany occupied during the first world war.

it has been found in the Lozère départment ( center France and not a ww1 combat area ) certainly a ww1 vet bring back .

Just curious, what will be the disposition of this G98 in France? De-militarized/cut/welded? Rechambered to a non military cartridge?

I'm sure there is a great story behind this rifle, one we will never know. This rifle certainly saw action in the Great War.

I hope the clean up is conservative, and we get to see more images of it.

no it's untouched , the cal is still 8x57 IS since 2015 we can get untouched rifles if we have FFT ( fédération française de tir ) or hunting licence , and like you i hope to get pics after cleaning .

Very interesting to see such an early rifle issued to a Reserve unit.
According to regulations, the Reserve units got their new rifles between 1908 and 1913.
Only very few Reserve units got their new Gew.98 rifles earlier.
Thanks for showing.
