Weimar Kar98a with 1932 e/6 Simson stock

I'll be posting a detailed photo study on it shortly. Stay tuned. I paid a bit more than I normally like to go, but it was a neat variant.

I was certainly surprised there was not a lot more interest in it and that it did not go higher. There's actually another bolt-mismatch out there right now with the same proofs. Kind of odd that you won't see these proofs often at all and then two of them show up together.

Yeah, I appreciated the rarity of it and have an affinity for 98as-- especially interwar rebuilds. Legacy had one last year too but it was like 3k. No way.

Stay tuned, I'll get it photographed probably tomorrow or Wed. It's a nice piece.

The real question for me is the barrel, these police attributed rifles often have very unique features, especially barrel work, - and of course the only rifles of this era that have a devoted following are 98b and police rifles, - the 1932 date on the LS is interesting, I know I have seen this before, but exact circumstance I can't remember. I will try and look into this (other examples) when I get on my main computer. Looks familar anyway...

A couple of questions I am pondering:

1) I'm assuming these e/6 stocks were made as spares by Simson in 1932 for one of the larger police refurb depots?

2) Any thoughts on the large "M" on the receiver face? That's a new one on me. Possibly a depot stamp?

Either way a cool interwar rebuild-- I will share another i found once I can photograph it.

I knew I had seen this "1932" before... this rifle CB bought in February 2011 ($1040 final price, came out of an estate sale in Lake Geneva, WI), we discussed it at length and although nothing especially informative came about it I will try and post some of Craig's comments that may prove useful. Simson and under BSW did make 98a components, handguards and muzzle covers, maybe some lids to MC's, - I doubt stocks were made, but possibly? Possibly for the police they made exception or Simson played some role in supply the stock from leftover surplus, but this could not have been widely carried out, - but I will check my Simson files for possible Simson/WaA6 stocks, but the only thing of note that occurred in 1932 was Papen's (Hindenburg's) emergency decree against Prussia, might have some police connection. Prussia had long (since the end of the war been even further left than Ebert and often resisted the RH rearmament plans, much of whose activities were in the east...)

Still, not sure what the 1932 could mean, CB didn't seem to have a guess either... as I recall, I read our emails yesterday, but I will have to review them to post anything he may have thought.

*** correction, noticed a 98a stock with WaA6 and Simson's commercial trademark, mountains with "S" in top peak.. will have to review this further.

Some of his thoughts, they were mixed into several topics and rifles, but these were his observations as he often provided on his acquisitions, - Craig really liked Republican era with organizational or ordnance worked done to them, - if they were unique especially.

** Did you look the barrel over in front of the RS? As this is the original barrel, fits perfectly others in this range, both lot-provider and acceptance, I doubt the police altered it, but often when they did replace or work a barrel they marked it before the RS... what about the underside of the bolt handle flat?

02/03/2011:

That Gb K98a is interesting – esp. w the M on the receiver. Altho some Germans think the P = Polizei I’ve seen no documentation. It does show up on some K98ks as well. Evidently there are no Pol unit markings on this K98a.

K98a Erfurt 1917/1920 SN 9525o

As visible, Simson stamp on underside stock, e/P on butt right, 1932 on butt left (not seen before), pinned rear sight (which I think but cannot prove is a Pol modification).
No Pol unit markings. Some Germans think P on underside K98k stocks = Pol; I haven’t seen on the side like this before.
M on leading edge receiver. (?)
Bayo stud blued; have on one other definitely Pol reworked K98a.
100% matched except for handguard which shows neat old reinforcing patch repair across potential grain flaw.
No SN front barrel band.
2-digit rear band renumbered 4 digit.
Sling with illegible (as yet) maker dated 193(2?).
Muzzle cap like no other K98a cap I have ever seen – stamped and welded(?) like K98k cap.
No other Simson-linked markings to be found.

Subject: K98a Erfurt 1917/1920 SN 9525o II

Barrel: Prussian pressure proof, SN, usual Fraktur inspection stamps, and BO 703

Stock: Absolutely no indications of Imperial markings anywhere. Recoil bolt no Fraktur inspector stamp. Of 19 other K98as in inventory only one has a blank recoil bolt and that is a Pol rework with new manufacture stock also w/o Imperial markings but with large Pol eagle w C on belly and oversize SN stamped on left side butt.

Subject: Yet more on Simson rebuild K98a

Attacked it prior to racking it; packed with grease. Some further observations:
Stacking hook 4-digit SN.
Sling band usual 2-digit SN on front edge, 4-digit on rear edge.
Floorplate no Imp. inspection
Cocking piece underside a clover stamp (seen that before, I think) Sub-contractor TM?
Ahead of front screw on receiver: 22; same in facing position on tg ahead of front tg screw socket. Assembly number?
Some pitting overblued in the rehab; they must have been desperate (or cheap, more likely).
