What Does The Star Mean

Hello, does anyone know the meaning / significance of the "star" above the serial number in the pic?

The rifle is a "42 marked 1939" dated German K98K.

The Star is on the left side of the receiver and I'm not seeing any other "star" symbols on the rifle.

Also, is there a good "comprehensive" book available that details the history of riles - including rifle markings and meanings?

The star is a doinked Russian capture X by Mitchell's Mausers. Translated into layman's terms, it means $hit.
