What letter suffix is this?

I just want a consensus of what letter suffix this is. It's on my S/42 1937. I'm leaning towards on 'a'. It just looks odd to me.

Thanks.

It's hard to tell because it's overstamped, the letter underneath appears to be a q or p? if so it may be an o. Any other places the letter suffix shows? These errors did occur at Mauser.

mrfarb, here is a picture of the one on the barrel and it seems to be the same as the receiver.

Let's narrow it down. Post photos of the barrel code and we can see what letter blocks are near this one, that will give us a better clue as to what it could be.

Have you a picture of the right receiver? There is a transition on the RR in the q-block of 1937, at least there seems to be in eagle styles (to nazi) and manner of acceptance. It proceeds quickly, in the p-block it follows the old pattern, by the r-block it has pretty much made the transition. Some variation is possible, but if this is a q-block it should fit the others and be easily discernible.

Here is the right side of receiver.

How far in the letter suffix did MO go in 1937? Mine must be late 1937 build?

Thanks Lee

Mauser went to the z-block in 1937, possibly higher. You should check Vol.I to see what Bruce came up with. This is definitely a q-block with that RR and BC.

Volume I reports 6337 z as the high known rifle for 1937, I have recorded two others, the highest 5474 z, so three z-blocks are known for sure and the fact that every block up to the z-block has numerous reports, it is a certainty Mauser went to the z-block (Mark Wieringa criteria for reported ranges, which I generally follow, required consecutive reports in the the blocks leading to the high or numerous reports in the block. The z-block covers both criteria.)

Thanks Loewe for the identifying the letter suffix. Sorry for my ignorance, BC=Barrel Code, what is RR? And I definitely need to get these books, they would help me out. Especially Vol. II when it comes out. I'm hoping they cover depot rifles from different districts. I picked one up last weekend from the 20th district. I have it posted over on gunboards in K98 section.

Thanks Lee

i think RR is for Right Receiver , loewe 'll certainly confirm if i'm right .

Yes, I use RR=right receiver (acceptance) and BC=barrel code, many others that are derived from my trends work (spread sheets logging characteristics of all rifles I come across). It saves typing and most on this forum know the more common ones used, SDP=Steyr-Daimler-Puch, MO=Mauser Oberndorf, MB= Mauser-Berlin etc..

Thanks again for the information and help. I just need to get into the collector lingo of the K98k better.:biggrin1:
