Who tries to sells this crap

I'm not K98k sniper expert what so ever but who in the hell would buy something like this. I mean really listing this as some rare prototype and someone was foolish enough to bid on it. Only thing that really troubles me about this piece is the seller said he bought it at the Rock island auction company. So are they selling alot of fakes now are what.

This one has serial number 7 but looks almost the same. Are they originals or fakes?

"This is another beautiful example of a prototype K98 style heavy barreled sniper rifle "Serial Number 7". This rifle is almost identical to the "Long Side" rifle that is also offered in this auction, except it was built using the turret type sniper set up."

In reference to S/N 7 (see link below)

Great bullshit story about barrel vibrations and bedding! I wonder how long it will take until someone tries to sell a K98 with lost duffle cut fore end as a "factory test rifle built for studying barrel vibrations and improve accuracy". To my untrained eye S/N 7 appears like after the war some Czechs dicked around with leftover German WW2 parts and post war Czech parts in an effort to throw together one of the ugliest sniper rifles ever. These "snipers" look outright retarded and I don't see the point of having a short barrel when your objective is sniping.

Whatever this abomination is, it makes absolutely no sense to me. What is the purpose of the post war winter trigger guard? So you can snipe wearing mittens? Just what you want as a sniper, right, mittens for that extra sensitive trigger feel? This patchwork of wartime and post-war parts resembling a scoped Mini-14 can easily be faked and I refuse to believe the Germans would have wasted precious resources towards the end of the war to design something this worthless. Makes a Volksgewehr look like a sophisticated piece of machinery.

Is S/N 7 someone's home made copy of S/N 3 which was allegedly made in 1941 or is it the other way around? S/N 7 was made with parts not available until late war or after the war, so how can it be be German made like RIA tries to instill? Why would they spend 4 years building 4 more prototypes of this still birth? Whoever owns this thing, I understand why you want to unload it below your cost. Go buy a boat. You already got an anchor.

Both of these are complete fantasy pieces, both came from the same collection on Rock Island and appear to be someones tinkering projects. Surely nobody thinks this is real stuff, then again...:googlie

Well, in defense of the monger, nobody said what it was a "prototype" of. I've made "prototypes" of all kinds of things, particularly with duct tape and bailing wire. Earlier today I made a prototype Canine Attention Obtainer out of a rolled up April 2015 Consumer Reports magazine.

Soon up for auction at RIA: Steyr M95 sniper prototype. Extremely rare and sought after. Only one like this is known to exist. Not a lot of markings on the entire rifle, I was told this is typical for SS contract. Upper hand guard has been removed to reduce barrel vibration and warpage caused by restricted heat transfer. Scope is a ZF4 Bu, as rare as the rifle itself, manufactured by Optikotechna. The mount is the correct wartime version with the large locking lever on the left side and is serial numbered, which is complete with the stamped sheet metal scope bands. A must have for every collector. Did I mention, it's a rare prototype? It comes with a certificate of authenticity provided by famous collector Pavel Nowak. I paid a lot for it and I hope I will get most of it back when it goes up for auction.

tons of fake / reproduction items popping up in auction houses for awhile now.
and they don't care. one in Germany knew some high end items were fake & went along with the sale, to collect their fees. now they & others being sued on one specific item ,under fraud / conspiracy charges.

Good. Maybe these places will do a little bit of due diligence before hocking crap from their catalogs.
