Will i go to collectors hell if... (matching 98k Question)

I have an all matching Portuguise Contract Mauser in mint condition, but I'm considering buying an original scope with original claw mount an attach it to the rifle.

Will i go to the collectors hell for this?

My own thoughts about the subject is that a lot of sniper, during WWII, was handed a scope which they could attache to their rifle, according to the book "Sniper on the eastern front - Sepp alleberger".

But, I'm FAR FROM an expert, and I don't want to ruin the rifle by "bubbafying" it, so what does the expert say?

Go buy a $300-500 RC or Yugo if you feel like you have to do that. Altering a $2,000 plus rifle that has most of its value tied into its originality would not be a bright move. Maybe you can afford the loss, but why do it?

The short answer is, yes.
The long answer is, most likley yes.
For what it's worth, Sniper on the Eastern Front by Albrecht Wacker is almost a fictional book. I wouldn't base any solid conclusions on this book, except that the Ostfront was hell, and i have it. Allerberger was undoubtedly a skilled sniper, but i don't know how much Wacker altered.

Thanks, that's what i thought, then I'll save it from me ;-)

Your replies just saved a 98K :happy0180:

Don't want to waste an original scope on a RC, seems kinda waste to me. Maybe I'll just go the replica route then :)

Would love to see some photos showing your original claw mount scope.
Can you please post some photos.
Thanks
Wolfgang

...as i wrote, i was considering buying one... Seen one for sale at a respected dealer in my country.

Edit:
Here's a picture of the one I'm talking about.

They claim it's original, I'm far from an expert.

Bolt mismatch is an all numbers matching rifle except the bolt. Prices on these probably 40% to 60% of an all matching rifle, but 140% - 160% of an RC.

The scope and mounts you show are turret mounts, not claw mounts.

Drilling and original matching gun is idiotic.

Same as asking, if I put a moustache on the mona lisa will i ruin it?

Theres nothing wrong with making a sniper clone from an RC. Lots of guys to it.

The stock and metal can be restored, and then source all the right era parts fot that rifle.

Down boy... the rifle has been saved!

About making a sniper out of an RC seems silly since the rifle will cost me $200 but the scope will cost $1000 :-/

I've been tryingh to read up about 98K snipers but I cant seem to find any info about how they are distinguished from regular 98K's (except for the scope)

I have the book "Mauser Military Rifles of the wolrd", Second Edition but the infomation about the Mauser snipers is really scarse :-/

Were they build in a certain way or were they just regular mausers fitted with scopes?

Some were regular production guns that exhibited better accuracy I believe.

some were purpose built with special thick sidewall receivers.

Would you say this was build as a sniper or is it just a regular 98K fitted with a scope?
(This one is for sale from the same company as the scope)
