Worth the rescue? Matching DOT44

Good evening. I will post pics as soon as I get home but I found a sporterized but matching dot 44. More details to follow but key points:

Rear sight & base removed and Lyman (?)I target sight added.

Original stock highly bubba'd.

bolt body polished.

Good (maybe): $289

I don't know if the Lyman is reversible or if to fix everything is worth it.

I bought a nice RC at the same place for the same price.

I sure hate seeing this but at least, I suspect, a WW2 vet got a nice hunting rifle out of the deal.

Whoa...hold -on..dont get discouraged yet.

When you say restore...do you mean for resale ,or for an investment.?

If so..then this is not for you..
but...
If you mean for a personal shooter/keeper you are much beter off with this than another RC

You can get an unumbered rear sight base assembly for around 75.00..maybe less if you are lucky...you can fill the lyman sight holes and with a good cold blue touch up it will be barely noticeable...plus they are close to the stockline anyway.

I have picked up a couple of decent stocks for around the 175.00... 200.00 hundy lately.

As for the buffed bolt.. disassemble it and let the bolt body set in vineager for awhile...the acidity will take away some of the shine.

That will put you in it for around 550.00...not cheap....but you could buy it and part it out for more than what they are asking for the whole gun...not a money maker by any stretch of the imagination though.

+1 on this, I also would sooner have that bolt matched rifle than an rc mixmaster. And like agalland said if you look around shows and watch ebay you can find the parts you need reasonable. Offer them 200.00 they probably will come down some. Just my two cents.
 
what about the peep sight?

I would only want it as a shooter and
and a piece of history.

Are those peep sights drilled or attached in a non-destructive manner?
 
On the bad sde,they are drilled and tapped..

ON the good side they can be filled..and if done competently are not that obvious unless you are really looking.

You can sell that lyman sight on ebay and reduce your buy-in cost...have done it a few times...once had one with the front base also...got 70 bucks for the damn thing...will most likely get around 35.00 for just the rear...wouldnt be surprised if you got a few bucks out of the stock.

You have to remember that while people like us are trying to restore them there is a whole nother group of individuals still taking them apart to make custom hunting rifles so you can salvage sportoring parts for cost reduction most times.

How you will stand cost wise in the end will depend on how hands on you want to be in the rebuild.

The receiver bridge has been ground on too. It's a loss, and after all the replacement parts have been bought and placed on this gun, other decent, but perhaps mismatched guns will have been stripped so that this drilled, ground and buffed rifle can look like it hasn't been messed with. But it will only look that way from 5 feet away..... Unless you can get it for 100-150, as a shooter, I would walk away.

oops...Missed that..deal killer.

Most everything else was able to be worked around...that is not...it truly is a 100.00 farm truck rifle now.
