Spandau 71/84 scope?

All matching 71/84 at the local store. Good shape, but this. Just looking to confirm this is not period done. Value destroyed?

I figured as much. Otherwise all matching (as far as I can tell) with exquisite wood stamps. No unit marking but could be had for $500. I was all excited until I saw that :facepalm:
 
With the holes there already I wouldn't be able to resist mounting another scope in the exact same spot....

I have never seen anyone scope a 71/84 before.

The earliest documents about "German" sniper scopes, I've come across date back to the early 1890s. IIRR in 1892 the Prussian Army ordered 70 scopes (Type: Beaulieu-Marconnay) for field trials. The scopes were mounted on brand new Gew. 88 rifles at the GwF Spandau.
With that order, two other field trials with scoped Gew. 88s were stopped.
 
Don't know about .43 Mauser ammo available in the US, but if you decide to buy the gun, you can have a period "scope" for it.
