Hello,
I've been collecting milsurp weapons for about 15 years now, however my direct personal experience with German WWII weapons is limited to Lugers. I have the opportunity to buy what is being offered as a K98k Turret Sniper. From my limited knowledge, it appears to have the correct stamps/marks and in the correct places, and the equipment appears to be correct. However, I am not fully convinced.
First, although it appears to have the correct stamps in the correct places, I am not confident enough in my ability to discern a real stamp for a sniper from a fake. Can someone with experience please take a look at the attached pictures and let me know their opinion? I am not experienced enough to know.
Second, the number on the scope ring doesn't match the rifle. However, I am wondering if the non-matching numbers on the scope ring would indicate this was a post war addition of the base, mount, and scope. Also, I am not familiar with how the finish on the mounts should look (smooth, swirls, etc...).
So the main concerns would be, is this a real sniper, and if so, was the equipment installed during the war (and refurbishment being the reason for non matching scope ring number), or after the war (i.e. someone recognized it as a sniper, and added the base and/or mount and/or scope)?
If someone could please provide some guidance, I would appreciate it.
Thank You,
Joe
