NEW! Item 587 M42 Single decal Luftwaffe camouflage helmet (the snow-turtle)
http://www.germanhelmetsinc.com/helmetssale.htm
An NS 62 M42 single decal helmet. This is a fairly unorthodox camouflage pattern made by the application of ovals and lozenge shaped panels of white paint which was mixed with a plaster-like substance. There is considerable wear at the top of the helmet but still it displays well from all horizontal angles. The eagle decal is a textbook NS style which is placed concentrically on the helmet instead of the often encountered NS factory mis-application which places the decal closer to the vent hole. The liner and strap show only light wear. This helmet fairly stands out on any collection shelf. $1650.00
From the lack of white camo on the rivets and white camo paint behind the rivets, it appears that the liner was out of this helmet when the camo was applied. The wear to the crown seems odd, not a natural wear pattern. It is always a nice touch to see a bit of camo paint on the chinstrap :|
"Fairly unorthodox" is right. This scheme resembles the tortoise shell style used in Italy using tan camo paint.
It appears that when the paint was still tacky, something was placed against the paint that pulled some of it off. The untouched areas remain pearl-white. IMO, period, 70 year old white paint should no longer be pearl white.
